Collection: Mark Curtis Hughes

Mark is a Northamptonshire based papercut artist and secondary school art teacher. Originally from Leicester, Mark’s practice was initially focused on relief printmaking.

Papercutting began as a means to build a bridge between his sketches and his woodcuts. The nature of working spontaneously with a scalpel into paper gradually took over until it became the focus of the process. This technique allows him to build a bridge between his sketches and his xylographies.

Freehand cutouts have a spontaneity which mirrors the sense of being caught in the flow of an involving society. The process itself is time consuming with each image drawing upon a range of sources and reference points
